Our first project…

We’re looking at providing a range of maps suitable for use of various devices. Right now, we’re working on providing a map that can be installed to selected Garmin GPS devices, covering the whole of the UK & Ireland, using data provided by OpenStreetMap. The picture above, from Google Earth, shows the area this map will cover.
More details, including a mockup of the data in the rest of the article…
Due to the sheer volume of data OSM now contains, the whole of the UK no longers fits into a single Garmin map tile. As such, we have broken the area down into different sections (coloured alternatively Blue and Red in the diagram above). As you can see, the London area is split down into slightly smaller areas – this again is due to the amount of data in the London area.
Although a scaled down image, you can see from the image above (London out to the M25) that we have managed to capture a large amount of data for the Garmin GPS units; roads (down to residential streets, as can be seen in the closeup of London’s West End below), railways, rivers, lakes, woodlands, footpaths are all included if they are available from OSM. Additional data, such as pubs is also included.
